SPL Labs Partially Reopened After Renovations

We are happy to announce that the SDSS Sample Preparation Laboratory (SPL) has now partially reopened after several months of renovations and equipment installation. We appreciate everyone’s patience during the closure and phased reopening process.

At this stage, the following rooms and equipment are available for trained users:

Currently Open Rooms and Equipment

Mitchell A54 – Saw Room
  • IsoMet 1000 Precision Saw
  • MK Diamond MK-101 Tile Saw
Mitchell A56 – Crushing Room
  • Retsch RS 200 Vibratory Disc Mill (Shatterbox)
  • Retsch DM 400 Disc Mill
  • Retsch BB 400 Jaw Crusher
  • Hammer Station
Mitchell A72 / A72B – Sieves and Milling
  • MM 500 Vario Mixer Mill
  • Sieve shaker and selected sieves

Respirator Requirement

Please note that the saw room, crushing room, and sieve areas currently require respirator use while final dust-control and EH&S evaluations are ongoing. Users must complete the following before access can be granted:

  • Medical questionnaire
  • Medical clearance appointment
  • Respirator fit test
  • Respirator training and quiz

Training and Access

All users must receive SPL training before independently using the equipment. Training is provided one-on-one or in small groups depending on the instrument and workflow.

Additional rooms and equipment will continue reopening in phases as installations, testing, and SOP development are completed. We look forward to welcoming users back into the labs.
