Upcoming Phased Lab Shutdown for Renovations

The Sample Prep Lab will be shutdown for renovations starting in June 2025.

The Sample Prep Lab will be undergoing renovations from June 2025-January 2026. The renovations will occur in phases such that the entire lab will not be shut down, and certain rooms will remain open. Please see the additional information below. 

Phase 1 

Rooms that will be shutdown: Mitchell A04, A54, A56 (rock saw/drill rooms).

Dates*: June 9th, 2025 - October 9th, 2025.
Existing machines that will not be accessible**: 
  • JET 20” Freestanding Drill
  • Covington 36” Slab Saw
  • Coretest DTS-430 dual trim saw (2” gap width) & cup wheel
  • Dual blade paleomag trim saw (1” gap width)
  • RYOBI bench drill
  • WEN bench drill
  • Buehler IsoMet 1000 Precision saw
  • MK Diamond MK-101 Pro Tile saw
  • Raytech mini saw

Phase 2: 

Rooms that will be shutdown: Mitchell A72, A72A, A72B, A68 (rock crushing rooms).

Dates*: October 9th, 2025 - January 14th, 2025.
Existing machines that will not be accessible**: 
  • SPEX 8000D Mixer Mill (ball mill)
  • Dedicated sieving space.
  • MAGQUIP bulk magnetic separator.

Several machines in these rooms will be moved to the new/completed lab rooms from Phase 1 during construction of Phase 2. As such, the following machines should generally remain available during the renovations (barring an installation/testing period for new machines).

  • Jaw crusher (new machine).
  • Disc mill (new machine).
  • Shatterbox/vibratory disc mill (new machine).
  • Hammer station
  • Sieve shaker/some sieves

*Timelines are subject to change. These dates are the preliminary schedule as determined by Bay Area Builders. **Some machines may be accessible after removal from primary location during shutdown.
